Over the years, there have been many versions of Doublemint commercials from Chicago’s Wrigley Chewing Gum Company in which twins celebrate the joys of doubling their pleasure and fun. Though the Wrigleys no longer own the Chicago Cubs, or their gum company for that matter, their former team was bludgeoned by doubles minted off the bats of the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night. At Busch Stadium, Cardinals hitters launched nine two-base hits on their way to a 12-0 blowout of the Baby Bears. Allen Craig and David Freese had two each. That total of nine represents the second-most doubles in a game in Cardinals history. The team record is 13 two-base hits collected in the second game of – what else? – a doubleheader. The date was on July 12, 1931 with the opponent being – the Cubs, of course. A dozen other times, the Cards logged eight doubles in a game, most recently on April 13, 2011.
