Military Voters are Pawns in Ohio Voting Dispute

(SOURCE: Flickr/iampeas) After Democrats fought their efforts to make voting more difficult for working class and minority voters, Republicans in Ohio have made false claims that Democrats are seeking to suppress the vote for members of the military. First, a brief history lesson. In 2004, as many as 174,000 potential Ohio voters chose not to vote rather than wait in excessively long lines at the ballot box. In an attempt to alleviate this problem, the state added 35 days of early voting for the 2008 election. Voters embraced early voting and turned out in huge numbers. Especially popular were the three days immediately before Election Day (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) when 93,000 people cast their votes. Among those voting on these last three days were workers who had difficulty taking time off work during the week and black congregations who voted immediately after Sunday church services, two demographics that usually favor Democrats. Coincidentally, in 2004, when there was no early voting, Ohio was won by the Republican presidential candidate. And in 2008, when more people were able to cast their votes, Ohio voted Democrat. Republicans noticed this and quickly took action. Since they controlled the state legislature, they were able to enact laws that cut early voting from 35 days to 11, and eliminated the final three days completely.
