Bernanke Likely to Allude to QE3 Next Friday

There is an intense debate going on in financial circles about what Chairman Bernanke has up his sleeve to stimulate the economy. Jon Hilsenrath of the Wall Street Journal, the unofficial mouthpiece of the Federal Reserve, alluded to as much when he quoted Chairman Bernanke as saying, “There is scope for further action by the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions and strengthen the recovery.” I believe that some sort of veiled bond buying announcement is likely to appear as early as next Friday, August 31. Why August 31 st ? That’s when Chairman Bernanke will give his annual speech at the Fed’s Jackson Hole, Wyoming meeting. Not only that, this August marks the 2 nd anniversary of Bernanke’s veiled announcement of QE2. Why do I believe an announcement is forthcoming? I have two reasons: While there appears to some improvement in economic growth, growth is still way below the Fed’s comfort level and the clamoring to “do something” is growing by the day. While normally I stay away from politics, Romney just reaffirmed in public that he would not reappoint Bernanke as Fed Chair. Whoa! Wait a minute. Stop the presses. Humor me while I become a little bit facetious here. Let’s tell one of the most powerful people on the planet that if I become President, your days as Fed Chairman are numbered.
